WHAT ARE PALAPAS?

A palapas is a thatched-roof, open-sided structure. The material used to cover the roof of a palapa typically consists of dried and woven palm-tree leaves. A palapa is sometimes referred to as a Palm or tiki hut.The most common place to see a palapa is in the tropics, where a palapa provides shade and refuge from the hot sun. Palapas are constructed in variety of sizes. Some Resorts set up a bar or serve meals under a a larger palapa; others devote the shaded area beneath the palapa to massage services.

WHAT IS THE THATCH MADE FROM?

Our Exclusive Palm Thatch is made from natural Mexican Palm.

DOES THE THATCH REQUIRE ANY SPECIAL CARE?

No. When the Thatch is new and first exposed to the rain, the palm sometimes leaches a natural runoff that can spot on the ground, but that washes off. If you're installing it near fresh cement without sealer then the runoff can damage the newly placed cement. We recommend your floor have a sealer to avoid damage done by runoff. To avoid unnecessary cleanup work, the thatch should be thoroughly hosed down.  This may be repeated a couple of times. Very rarely excessive humidity in the environment can cause light mildew spotting of the palm material to occur. This can be left alone with no ill-effect to the palm or can be partially removed by spraying the affected area with 25% bleach / 75% water mixture. Then thoroughly hosing off the affected areas. Do this on a Sunny Day.

HOW LONG DOES THE THATCH LAST?

The Mexican Palm Thatch lasts outdoors approximately 2-5 years, depending on the climate. If there is a lot of humidity, wind or rain, your thatch will last closer to the lower end of the spectrum. The Color will Change as the Product Weathers.  LMIL Palapas does not sell any products that have any type of fire retardant solution.

DOES THE THATCH WITHSTAND HEAVY WINDS?

The woven thatch on properly installed palapas holds up well in heavy coastal California winds- tiny woven holes permit air circulation and will "breathe" with the wind instead of fighting it as canvas or metal does.
Palm capes hold up well in windy areas when secured correctly- the woven thatch permits air circulation.
